Hey Anil,

First of all, thanks for asking this question. I had worked on writing and illustrating that post for over a month, and after I finally published it, I just felt empty and directionless. But now you’ve given me renewed purpose! (Until I finish writing this too…)

I definitely consider myself a n00b at illustration. I doodle in my notebook and have taken a few drawing classes, but this was my first time actually anything: drawing to communicate ideas. I was learning as I was going along, so I’ll share how all that went down.

Back up, back up. What *is* illustration?

Illustration is a means of communication, and it’s more about designing different solutions rather than expressing yourself. (Of course, bringing in your own point of view is still very important.)

In my case, I wanted to add illustrations to break up the wall of text, add some visual interest (without being distracting), and make the whole blog post feel just a bit more . And above all, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and develop some new skills.

There’s a couple of parts that make up an illustration:

Concept: Style:

And on top of all that, there’s the skill of using your tools to properly execute your vision — whether that’s pen and paper, or in my case, Adobe Illustrator . For lack of a better word, I’m going to call this “ artistic skill .”

Like everything else in the world, these components are all connected. Better artistic skill expands your visual vocabulary so you can draw more complex things, certain concepts constrain your stylistic options, the style you picked can affect the compositions, and so on and so forth.

My meandering process

A professional illustrator working with a client usually works in a structured, methodical manner—sets of sketches, color palette references, rounds of review, etc. They’ve developed their own styles and can draw exactly what they want, how they want it, and fast. Since I was just doing these for myself (and for the first time), my process was a lot more organic.

I started doodling on my iPad Pro…

Traced it and modified it in Illustrator, playing around with color and line quality…

OK cool, so I’ve figured out a rough style I’d like the rest of the illustrations to follow. (I would later come to regret deciding this early.) Back to the iPad for more concept sketching.

As you can see, I played around with lettering-based ideas for the section headers. My comfort zone is lettering, so I decided to push my limits and focus on the illustrations. I laid out some type on the computer and sent it back to the iPad…

Eventually I decided that sketching on the iPad wasn’t helping me all that much, so I tried blocking out my compositions directly in Illustrator.

By now, I had been working on the illustrations for so long that the style had changed to something more expressive. There’s a lot more variation in line weight, and there’s lots of little squiggles that look handmade. Without realizing it, I had brought in some qualities of my past lettering work.

Executive Summary

Reprint: R1007L

The notion that companies must go above and beyond in their customer service activities is so entrenched that managers rarely examine it. But a study of more than 75,000 people interacting with contact-center representatives or using self-service channels found that over-the-top efforts make little difference: All customers really want is a simple, quick solution to their problem.

The Corporate Executive Board’s Dixon and colleagues describe five loyalty-building tactics that every company should adopt: Reduce the need for repeat calls by anticipating and dealing with related downstream issues; arm reps to address the emotional side of customer interactions; minimize the need for customers to switch service channels; elicit and use feedback from disgruntled or struggling customers; and focus on problem solving, not speed.

The authors also introduce the Customer Effort Score and show that it is a better predictor of loyalty than customer satisfaction measures or the Net Promoter Score. And they make available to readers a related diagnostic tool, the Customer Effort Audit. They conclude that we are reaching a tipping point that may presage the end of the telephone as the main channel for service interactions—and that managers therefore have an opportunity to rebuild their service organizations and put reducing customer effort firmly at the core, where it belongs.

Conventional wisdom holds that to increase loyalty, companies must “delight” customers by exceeding service expectations. A large-scale study of contact-center and self-service interactions, however, finds that what customers really want (but rarely get) is just a satisfactory solution to their service issue.

Reps should focus on reducing the effort customers must make. Doing so increases the likelihood that they will return to the company, increase the amount they spend there, and speak positively (and not negatively) about it—in other words, that they’ll become more loyal.

To meet customers’ expectations, reps should anticipate and head off the need for follow-up calls, address the emotional side of interactions, minimize the need for customers to switch service channels, listen to and learn from disgruntled customers, and focus on problem solving, not speed.

The idea that companies must “delight” their customers has become so entrenched that managers rarely examine it. But ask yourself this: How often does someone patronize a company specifically because of its over-the-top service? You can probably think of a few examples, such as the traveler who makes a point of returning to a hotel that has a particularly attentive staff. But you probably can’t come up with many.

Did you know that luxury books on geographical topics and natural history, and some children’s books, had printed illustrations which were then coloured by hand but in Europe, none of the experimental techniques for true colour printing became widely used before the mid-19th century.

Today, a book illustration could be designed in any technique and then printed. This style is very versatile and depends on the vision of the authour and the subject of the book. Illustrators try to create eye-catching covers in order to compete with the piles of books in bookshops. It is very specific style, which demandscatchingthe viewer’s attention, giving a hint ofwhat is inside the book and sometimes, it is the cover that sells the book (or publication).

While book and publication illustrations should be supporting and illuminating a certain idea, without stealing the show from the text, advertising type of illustration is meant to do just that – grab your attention and make a lasting impression on one big idea or brand/product. Many companies choose illustration as the medium to send their message to the audience, because the style better translates the idea than photography, for example.

Branding/Logo type of illustration is very specific style, requiring a certain set of skills. For example, a logo should be recognizable and readable at smaller sizes. Therefore, the illustrator should carefully plan the details of the logo. Logos should be simple, yet grabbing attention and memorable. Sometimes, businesses need more than a logo illustration, but mascots, cartoonized version of their employees or products. With their help, the brandsenhance their presence and impression on customers.
